Hershel “Woody” Williams, the last surviving WW2 Medal of Honor recipient, has died. Williams died at a Veterans Affairs hospital in Huntington, West Virginia. He served as a demolition sergeant in the 3rd Marines Division. During a landing on Iwo Jima in 1945, Williams was credited with going into machinegun fire to take out the enemy with a flamethrower.
In a tweet, Senator Joe Manchin said Woody Williams was the embodiment of a true American hero.
Woody Williams was the embodiment of a true American hero. Americans like Woody answered the call to serve our great nation and their sacrifices allow us to enjoy the freedoms we hold dear.
